Since it first launched in the UK in the 1970s, push fit plumbing has continued to evolve. As one of the most technologically advanced type of plumbing systems, plastic push fit is compatible with traditional plumbing materials like copper.
In this blog, we explain the simple steps required to successfully join HepO connectors to copper pipes.
As the creator of the first ever plastic push fit plumbing system, we understood that it would need to be used in conjunction with copper pipes. So, we’ve made sure our Hep2O fittings can join with metric copper pipe to BS EN 1057 – R250 standard. It’s also possible to fit 10mm BS EN 1057 – R220 copper pipe to the Hep2O connector but because this is a much softer material, more care needs to be taken when joining these two products because the copper can easily become misshapen or dented.
Joining the connectors to the plastic pipe is incredibly easy and doesn’t require any additional tools or equipment to create a robust and watertight seal, and it’s just as simple when working with copper.
To join a copper pipe with the HepO push fit connector, you’ll need the following equipment:
Once you have these items to hand, follow this step by step guide to join the push fit connector to the copper pipe:
1: Clean and prepare the pipe edge
Before you begin, you’ll need to make sure that the pipe has a nice clean and smooth edge. The best way to do this is by using a pipe slice or pair of pipe cutters.
If you don’t have access to a pipe slice or pipe cutters, you can use a hacksaw instead, but it can sometimes leave a ragged edge so make sure to double check before inserting the pipe into the push fit connector.
If you spot the pipe has a ragged edge, we’d recommend deburring it with either an emery cloth or metal file as they can help to create a nice smooth finish.
It’s important to have a smooth edge on the pipe so that it doesn’t ruin the O-ring that’s inside the push fit connector as this can compromise the fitting. In fact, this is often what causes a fault with the system and can result in leaks.
2: Measure the pipe
Once the pipe has been cut and deburred, grab the pipe and the fitting. Then put the pipe so that it’s full socket in the connector.
In case you’re fitting in the ceiling or under the floor, where it’s harder to see, we’d recommend marking the pipe with a pen when it’s at full socket for an easy reference point.
3: Insert the pipe to the push fit connector
To insert the pipe, make sure the joint is square and then push the pipe up to the pen mark. Gently pull back on the pipe to guarantee the grab-ring engages correctly to stop the pipe from withdrawing – and that’s it.

Our specially formulated In4Sure joint recognition technology means that the copper pipe will be securely connected every time. With a simple push and twist motion, the two profile surfaces come into contact with one another when a rumble sensation is felt, creating a secure and watertight seal.
For more than 30 years, push fit plumbing has delivered exceptional performance and is known today as the professional system of choice.
Suitable for hot and cold water and central heating systems, available in a variety of sizes and able to work in conjunction with copper, the Hep2O plastic push fit system is perfect for professional plumbers.
