Centrándose en el consumo de energía y las iniciativas de sostenibilidad -incluida la promoción de edificios sostenibles-, la UE se ha fijado ambiciosos objetivos para reducir las emisiones en todo el mundo, los cuales son:   - Reducción de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero en un 20%. - Reducir el consumo de energía en un 20%. - Promover el uso de energías renovables hasta un 20%. Se calcula que el 40% del consumo mundial de energía procede de los edificios residenciales, por lo que la arquitectura ha pasado a ocupar un lugar central a la hora de hacer las viviendas más sostenibles. En los últimos años, un cambio notable hacia diseños y materiales ecológicos está promoviendo una vida renovable para las generaciones venideras.   Los edificios sostenibles están diseñados para proteger el medio ambiente conservando la energía y los recursos.   Para alcanzar niveles óptimos de eficiencia, deben construirse de acuerdo con una serie de criterios que incluyen características como un menor consumo de agua, materiales aislantes optimizados y fuentes de energía renovables. Otras particularidades que debe poseer un edificio sostenible con:   - Un edificio sostenible debe ser un centro neurálgico de eficiencia, no sólo utilizando la energía con prudencia, sino también captándola y dándole un buen uso. - Esta estructura se debe diseñar y construir para maximizar los beneficios de la luz natural y el flujo de aire, proporcionando un entorno confortable sin comprometer la sostenibilidad. - Que no interfiera con el ecosistema y utilice energías renovables para limitar la contaminación. - Utilizar materiales reciclables o ecológicos en los proyectos de construcción ayuda a reducir el impacto medioambiental de estas estructuras, al tiempo que garantiza su longevidad. - Mejorar el confort y bienestar de la comunidad y sus habitantes. - Que cuide la estética del entorno sin desentonar.
