      24 October 2021

India, 25 October 2021 - After the recent acquisition of a manufacturing plant in Hyderabad, Telangana, Wavin, an innovative pipes and fittings solution provider for the building and infrastructure industry, has announced the acquisition of a new facility in Neemrana, Rajasthan, from Dura-Line. It’s the second acquisition by the company in 2021 in India to meet the emerging demand for advanced water & gas pipes and fittings for below-ground use and CPVC, uPVC, & SWR pipes for above-ground applications.

The second plant acquisition is a part of Wavin's ongoing expansion into the Indian and APAC markets. The company reinforces its commitment to the Indian government's ‘Make in India’ initiative and finds the investment critical to provide sustainable solutions to secure drinking water supply to a growing urban population, particularly in North India.

The Neemrana plant, with best industry practices will continue producing advanced water and gas products for below-ground use and invest in other extrusion lines to produce CPVC, uPVC, & SWR pipes for above-ground applications.

Commenting on the plant acquisition, Maarten Roef, President Wavin, said, “Wavin is now well positioned to serve the growing market of India and greatly contribute to building healthy, sustainable environments. The geographical coverage, which the Neemrana and Hyderabad facilities offer, is quite extensive. Indeed, with these two locations and its warehouses, we are set to efficiently serve the districts where most of the market growth is taking place.”

Wavin will produce a wide range of PVC/ CPVC/ SWR pipes and fittings locally. Wavin’s cost-efficient, innovative and reliable products and solutions promote sustainable development and support future-proof infrastructure building requirements in India. The company manufactures these products and system solutions per the strictest quality standards and is fully compliant with governing standards without any compromises to match customer expectations.

Wavin is also trying to create positive change by training and upskill thousands of plumbers through distributors and channel partner across India to ensure the plumbers can perform their jobs expertly and contribute to ensuring safe and reliable drinking water installations.

Free the tree (the importance of urban green)

For cities, rainwater has long been public enemy number one. Urbanization and an increasingly complex infrastructure, with an expanding amount of traffic, have led to a big challenge for cities when it comes to rainwater: how do we get rid of it as quickly as possible? Rising temperatures add an even larger sense of urgency to this problem: it will increase uncomfortable living conditions in the cities we live in. Extreme weather events are following one another in rapid succession, with heavier showers and sometimes even floods as a result with long warm and dry periods in between. Cities are struggling more than ever to deal with extreme amounts of rainwater.

As an expert in (rain)water management, we pride ourselves in finding smart solutions to deal with these issues, and more often than not we solve problems by connecting multiple solutions for other problems into one. Solving rainwater discharge issues while simultaneously helping create more cooling off places, oxygen as well as adding character to grey cities is an interesting challenge. We need to connect and combine solutions to solve problems, more particularly: we need to help change the perception cities hold when it comes to rainwater if we truly want to build future-proof cities. Instead of treating rainwater as dangerous, which it can be, we should look towards the benefits of water. Simply put, better blue (rainwater) management leads to better green management, which helps massively with keeping our grey (urban) environment cool and liveable. The recently published report ‘Circular Water Cities’ of the World Economic Forum is a great read on how cities can optimize the reuse of water and wastewater resources.

      Water as an opportunity

One of the most important reasons why cities are not able to handle big amounts of rainwater is because they are not designed for it, yet. Our streets and roads aren’t all able nor equipped to absorb current rainfall. Which explains that the default perception of cities is to get rid of the water. However, that perception is shifting more and more towards the idea that water can also be used to cool cities. Either via bringing back to surface water like lakes and ponds, but also to water trees. Because, what if we told you that trees can contribute big time to cooling down a city? At Wavin, we look at water as an opportunity, a valuable source, rather than a threat for urban areas. That’s why we asked ourselves: how can we make use of these large amounts of rainwater in a way that we can connect it to trees in an urban environment? A so-called closed loop, where a positively reinforcing balance for water and city is present of course with the help of our best friend: trees.

      Trees are vital

Trees play a vital role in our lives. They provide us with oxygen, store CO2, bring us shade, and: they make us happy. We need trees, not only in forested areas, rural areas or our backyard, but also in the places where more and more people are packed together, in cities. And that is because trees are natural problem solvers. By providing oxygen as well as shade they can easily combat heat stress, if we give them a helping hand in their growth. Bigger and healthier trees can help make cities future proof by acting as a natural air conditioning unit. A fully grown tree can absorb about 150 kilograms of Co2 per year. If you think about it, and if we take London as an example, we find that the inner London carbon storage equals half a million tons that trees can take up, which is 30 million pounds that would have to be paid for the same amount of Co2 storage.

      Lack of space

So the solution for fighting climate change and heat stress seems simple: plant trees in cities. We definitely should, but there’s one big bottleneck: space. As much freedom and space as trees have in forests and other green areas, they struggle in urban environments. Especially in busy city centers. Trees need space to grow, above ánd below the ground. But the existing infrastructure and the need to keep building new homes for the growing population don’t allow them.

At Wavin, we found a solution for that: Wavin TreeTank®. A system consisting of modular units installed around a void where the tree will be positioned. After the tree is planted, it will be anchored and pipework is installed for irrigation and ventilation. The Wavin TreeTank system allows the roots with water and access for air nutrients. Because of this the roots get the space they need to grow and branch out. At the same time, the system acts as a barrier against the roots causing damage at the ground level, like pavements and the pipework. In this short video, the working of TreeTanks is very well explained.

      Future proof cities

Luckily, we see that landscape architects and city authorities realize how much good greenery can do for a city. More and more city planners recognize the importance of investing in sustainable development. The United Nations also challenges cities to grow more trees in cities with their trees in cities challenge in which they aim to localize action to help urban authorities to control surface water, reduce air conditioning needs and more in their cities. Scandinavian and in particular Danish cities are in full swing as well. The canopy - the percentage of trees - within a city environment is an important pillar for these city governments as they understand how much more well grown trees can do for a city in regard to heat stress and other climate issues. By 2030, the City of London aims to have 10% more green coverage, similarly Brussels is aiming for 17%. The French government has passed legislation requiring canopy in the cities to be above a certain percentage, and the mayor of the country’s capital has made it a top priority to create an urban wood in Paris.

If we want to build future-proof cities, the shift towards a greener environment is inevitable. So we’re happy to see the tide is turning and more and more cities are open for change. Wavin is committed to the urban green movement and is collaborating with towns and cities all over Europe to plant trees. Like in the city of Hasselt, in Belgium. Our Wavin TreeTank made it possible for the municipality to plant 86 large trees in the Quartier Bleu district. To date, 2500 cubic meters of material for the tree tanks has now been delivered and assembled. After this pilot case, in 2019, we’ve scaled up our activities with 11 projects to date across Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and Ireland)

      Social value

Next to dealing with rainwater, energy reduction and climate control, there’s one impactful - and possibly quite surprising - side effect that should not be overlooked when it comes to trees. Wim Vandecauter, Business Development Manager at Wavin: “Trees are causing house prices to rise up between 5 to 18%. You can look at this financially, but it indicates the social character of a tree. The tree is a reference point, a social meeting place. Trees are air filters, provide shade and last but not least: people love to see a fully grown tree nearby house.”

Simply put: people love trees. So let’s give them some love back. Investing in greener environments leads to a nicer place to call home: a future proof city.

      06 July 2021

The strategic move is a key step towards expanding the business globally and supporting local manufacturing of Wavin’s key products and solutions.

India, 07 July 2021 - Wavin, an innovative pipes and fittings solution provider for the building and infrastructure industry, has announced the acquisition of the Dura-Line manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, India. With this takeover, the company reinforces its commitment to the government initiatives such as “Make in India” and will be deploying its newest solutions and technologies in a crucial growth market within India and throughout APAC.

Dura-Line, also part of Orbia, is a TL-9000 and ISO-9001 rated manufacturer of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduits serving the telecommunications, enterprise, and electrical markets. Wavin will continue producing the advanced water & gas pipes and fittings for below-ground use and invest in new technology assets to produce Wavin PVC and CPVC products for supply of drinking water (hot and cold), proficient transport of sewage (domestic & industrial waste) and rainwater for better sanitation, and hygiene.

With global knowledge and expertise in providing water management solutions for the building and infrastructure industry driven by innovation and technology, Wavin re-entered the Indian market in 2020 considering the urgent need for clean drinking water and sanitation. Today, there are an estimated 88 million people in India that lack access to safe drinking water and 910 million people with insufficient access to improved sanitation.

“At Wavin, we are committed to enabling clean and safe water supplies, as well as better sanitation and hygiene, which are paramount in India. Wavin’s purpose is to work towards transforming cities to be future-proof and buildings to be comfortable, clean, safe, and energy-efficient. The acquisition of Dura-Line’s manufacturing plant is a major step on our global expansion journey, as well as towards our objective of responding to India’s infrastructure and environmental needs. We are excited about achieving our goal of setting up manufacturing unit in India to serve the market- a significant milestone of expanding our global footprint with our own factory in India” commented Freek Crum, President, Wavin APAC.

Wavin will produce a wide range of PVC/ CPVC/ SWR pipes and fittings locally with the latest development. Wavin’s cost-efficient, technologically enabled, innovative and reliable products and solutions promote sustainable development and support future-proof infrastructure building requirements in India. The company manufactures these products and system solutions in accordance with the strictest quality standards and fully compliant with governing standards without any compromises application-wise to match our customers’ expectations. Having developed strong channel partners and distribution networks, Wavin products are now available in key markets across India to help our customers achieve their own environmental goals and responsibilities along side our own.

“India market with its double-digit growth potential of infrastructure markets makes it among the priority markets for us globally. We are progressing as per our plans for building local manufacturing capacity in the country. As we work with our partners to optimize our footprint in India, we will be creating employment and earning opportunities for people and communities we operate in.” Freek further added.

Both Wavin and Dura-Line are group companies within Orbia, a global leader in specialty products and innovative solutions for building and infrastructure, precision agriculture, health care delivery, and data communications.

      Building Better with BIM

Our whole world was turned upside down last year. Many people are seeing we need to do better - Covid-19 has instilled a sense of urgency. We’ve learned a very important lesson during this absurd year; even though the negative impact of the human race has taken a huge toll on our environment, we can take actions to positively impact the future of this planet. Our actions have immediate impact. In many cities we saw a decrease in air pollution. Clean skies in big cities in China. The water in Venice cleared up right before our eyes. Who would want to go back to business as usual when we know we can do better? It’s time to put sustainable growth in the front and prioritize the future, rather than the present. Throughout the years, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has allowed us at Wavin to take leaps when it comes to clean, efficient and sustainable building performance.

Today, over half the world’s population lives in urban areas. And, according to the United Nations, that number will grow to two-thirds by 2050. Cities will have to adapt, in order to be safe and sustainable in the face of extreme weather and other climate hazards – like massive, intense rainfalls and severe droughts. Technologies and strategic partnerships will play a key role in transforming our cities by making them greener and more livable. Wavin, with its innovative solutions and commitment to building healthy, sustainable environments, is poised and ready to take on the challenge. And we are in good company. Sustainability pioneers, like Sacha Stolp, Director of Innovation for the Future-Proof Assets Program in Amsterdam, are leading the crusade. One neighborhood at a time. City by city.
